WWF ITALY

WWF Italy is an environmental organization created in 1966 as a branch of WWF International. The main goal of the organization is funding and promoting projects aimed at nature conservation.


WWF Italy encompasses 19 regional offices and about 200 local groups, in which almost 5,000 volunteers actively participate in the conservation and fund-raising activities.

ONE OF THE LARGEST ENVIRONMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS

World Wide Fund for Nature was conceived in 1961, in Switzerland.

This organization has 5 millions members all over the world and implements conservation projects in more than 100 different countries.

Its brand, the panda, is one of the most popular in the world and synonymous of concrete commitment towards the conservation of the natural ecosystems and the environmental sustainability.

SICILY REGION – DEPARTMENT OF LAND AND ENVIRONMENT – REGIONAL DEPARTMENT OF THE ENVIRONMENT (DRA)

Within the Sicily Region, the Department of the Environment is in charge of: planning and governance related to water and waste, spatial planning, environmental assessment, conservation of the natural heritage.

 

THE DEPARTMENT OF THE SICILY REGION DEALING WITH THE ENVIRONMENT

The Department of the Environment is in charge of:

  • planning and coordinating the environmental strategies;
  • planning, management and surveillance of several protected areas, including Natura 2000 sites;
  • developing and managing a GIS platform as a tool to support the land management within protected areas;
  • promoting the environmental values.

In Sicily the Natura 2000 network includes 208 SCIs, 15 SPAs, and 15 areas classified as SCIs and SPAs, resulting in a total of 238 Natura 2000 sites, corresponding to about 450,000 ha (18% of the island surface).

SICILY REGION – DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE, RURAL DEVELOPMENT AND MEDITERRANEAN FISHING – REGIONAL DEPARTMENT OF LAND AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT (DRSRT)

The jurisdiction of this Department covers the whole Sicily, where it operates through its Provincial branches and other administrative units.


The main task of this Department is the management of the publicly owned forest resources.

THE DEPARTMENT DEALING WITH THE FOREST RESOURCES

The DRSRT tasks can be summarised as follows:

  • enhancement of the forest resources;
  • improvement of the economy in the mountainous areas;
  • forest restoration;
  • management of mountainous pastures;
  • management of protected areas, particularly of 32 Natural Reserves;
  • prevention and fight against forest fires;
  • promotion of educational activities.

GRUPO DE REHABILITACIÓN DE LA FAUNA AUTÓCTONA Y SU HÁBITAT (GREFA)

GREFA is a NGO created in 1983. Its headquarters are located in Majadahinda, in the surroundings of Madrid, Spain.


This organization pursues the conservation of wildlife and its habitat, other than the promotion of the environmental awareness.

THE NGO THAT HAS CREATED ONE OF THE LARGEST WILDLIFE RESCUE CENTRES IN EUROPE

GREFA owns one of the largest wildlife rescue centres of Europe, a centre for captive breeding where several species are bred every year to restock the natural populations. The centre also includes an environmental awareness facility targeting more than 2,000 students per year.

Since its creation, GREFA delivered several projects tackling threatened species in Spain and in other European countries. GREFA has more than 3,000 members, 20 staff, and an average balance of 400,000 euros. GREFA is currently running the project LIFE Bonelli LIFE 12 NAT/ES/000701.
